I first met Jonathan a few years ago in Santa Fe and knew right away he was a character, but I had no idea he was so multi-faceted!
In this book, Hollingsworth dresses as, well, everyone he ever met while living in Los Angeles (he is now moving to New York City and I can’t wait to see what he does there). This includes preachers and valley girls, actresses and home boys, and my favorite, the tourist from New Jersey. The extensive make-up and use of old Polaroid film certainly help get the point across and add to the humor of the book. Yes I said humor because in spite of the hilarity of such dress-up, at times, the book can be rather sad. Just look at the last four photographs.
This is another well-done, self-produced book that is sure to make you laugh and ponder all of the characters within. Every time I look at it I can’t help but think of Cindy Sherman’s early work.
The only text in the book is the description of the person next to each photograph, unless you count the endpapers, which are black with white scribbling, and drawings that are just as entertaining as the contents of the book.
This book, with its powder blue cloth covers, is much different from Hollingsworth’s first book “What We Think Now”, a book of politically charged images that no doubt take a shot at the former Bush Administration. It’s nice to see that the artist does not take himself too seriously, all of the time.
So whether you view this book as a sad commentary on life in Los Angeles or a rather silly take on your friends and acquaintances, it’s still an interesting photography book that makes you think about the modern persona.
